Below you will find our weekly teaching and learning summary to find out how we develop and enrich your child's teaching and learning whilst they are with us.

Week ending What we have been learning about
14/2/25 This week in Year 1, we have been celebrating all our fantastic learning as we come to the end of the term! We continued exploring addition within 20 in maths, building our confidence with number facts. In writing, we have been practising using the conjunctions 'and' to make our sentences even better.  In history, we wrapped up our learning about astronauts by thinking about what they need to travel to space and reflecting on the incredible moon landing. We also revisited our science topic on materials, discussing everything we’ve discovered this term. It has been a wonderful term, and we are so proud of how much the children have achieved. We hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable break—well done, Year 1!
7/2/25 This week in Year 1 has been filled with excitement and discovery! Our trip to The Look Out Centre was a great success—the children had an amazing time exploring all different kinds of materials through hands-on activities. In history, we continued learning about astronauts and what they need to travel to space, as well as exploring the historic moon landing. In maths, we focused on addition within 20, using different strategies to solve problems. In our writing, we have been learning how to use the conjunction 'and' to join ideas together in sentences. It’s been a fantastic week of learning and fun—well done, Year 1!
31/01/25 This week in Year 1, we’ve been diving into exciting new learning! We started our new book, 'Man on the Moon – A Day in the Life of Bob' by Simon Bartram. The children have been making predictions about the story and learning how to share their opinions sensibly.  In maths, we began our new topic—addition and subtraction within 20—building our confidence with number facts. In science, we went on a learning walk around the school to explore where we can find different materials and how they are used in our environment.  In history, we learnt about the incredible Mae Jemison and her amazing contributions to space exploration. In art, we spent time refining our Barbara Hepworth-inspired sculptures, making sure they were just right. Another fantastic week of learning—well done, Year 1!
24/01/25 This week in Year 1 has been full of creativity and learning! In maths, we worked on using number lines to 20, practising our counting and positioning skills. In writing, the children have been focusing on composing and writing simple dictated sentences, doing a fantastic job with their handwriting and spelling.  In art, we learnt more about Barbara Hepworth and her incredible sculptures. The children were inspired to create their own air-drying clay sculptures in her style, and they turned out beautifully! It’s been a week of hard work and creativity—we’re so proud of what the children have achieved!
17/01/25 This week in Year 1, we’ve continued our fantastic learning journey! In maths, we’ve been working on numbers and number representations up to 20, using a variety of activities to deepen our understanding.  We finished our 'Beegu' book this week and have been learning about speech bubbles, exploring how they are used in stories to show what characters are saying. In history, we’ve been learning all about Neil Armstrong and his incredible contributions to space exploration.  In science, we’ve been describing materials, using words like hard, rigid, soft, bumpy, and transparent to explain their properties. The children are becoming excellent scientists and storytellers, and we’re so proud of their hard work!
10/01/25 What a great start to the new term in Year 1! The children have returned from the holidays feeling positive and ready to learn. In maths, we’ve been working on numbers within 20, building confidence with counting, ordering, and simple calculations. We started our new Power of Reading text, Beegu, which tells the story of a little yellow alien who has crash-landed on Earth. In science, we began exploring our new topic, everyday materials, where we are learning about different types of materials - like wood, metal, and plastic - and their uses in our daily lives. In history, we started learning about significant individuals, focusing on astronauts and their incredible journeys into space. In art, we began studying Barbara Hepworth, exploring her sculptures and learning about her unique style. It’s been a fantastic first week back, and we’re excited for all the learning ahead!
20/12/24 Year 1 has had a lovely final week of the Autumn term. Within their writing lessons, the children have been looking at letter writing and practise this skill by writing a letter to Santa about their Christmas wishes. On Wednesday, we very much enjoyed our Christmas jumper, where we all participated in our class Christmas party. Next term, we are looking forward to learning about our new topics and going on a trip to the Look Out Centre. 
13/12/24 This week in Year 1, the children have been busy with some festive fun. We have made Christmas crafts and for our DT lesson the children made their very own cup and ball toy. This links to our learning in History. We have been learning about toys of the past and present. In writing, we finished reading our Power of Reading text! The children loved reading about Rabbits bad habits and based their writing on the book. During our maths lessons we have been focusing on number bonds to 10 and addressing any misconceptions before we move onto a new topic next term.
06/12/24 This week in Year 1 has been full of festive fun and fantastic learning! We worked hard on our Nativity play, practicing our lines and songs to make it a performance to remember. The children did so well. In maths, we’ve been solving addition problems, using different strategies to find the answers. In our science, we also learned all about the clothes we wear in winter, discussing how they keep us warm and cozy during the chilly weather. We’re so proud of everything the children have achieved this week and can’t wait for more seasonal fun ahead!
29/11/24 This week in Year 1, it’s been wonderful to be back with the children after being away! We’ve been busy with Nativity practice, and the children are working hard on their singing and dancing. In maths, we’ve been developing our addition skills, and we wrapped up 'A New House for Mouse' by writing story summaries to retell the tale in our writing sessions. In history and DT, we’ve explored what materials new and old toys are made from. It’s been a joyful and productive week!
22/11/24 This week Year 1 have had a lovely week. In writing they have learnt to use adjectives to retell our story 'New House for Mouse'. The children have worked so hard on this and becoming more confident at using capital letters and full stops. In our Maths lesson, we have been building on our previous learning of number bonds and learning to recall our number bonds to 10. Today, we loved the Toy Workshop which took us on a journey of toys from the past!
15/11/24 This week, in Year 1, we've been mastering number bonds to 10 in maths. We enjoyed a fantastic Diwali dance workshop that brought the celebrations to life. In writing, we've been using exciting new vocabulary from 'A New House for Mouse' to enrich our sentences. In history, our focus has been on 19th-century toys and the materials they were made from. It’s been a week filled with learning, creativity, and cultural exploration!
08/11/24 In our first week of Autumn 2, Year 1 dived into an exciting new text, 'A New House for Mouse' by Petr Horáček, which inspired our writing activities. We also began exploring number sentences in maths and started learning about toys from the past in history. For a special whole-school art project, we decorated handprints, adding our unique touch to the display. It’s been a creative and enriching start to the new term!
25/10/24 This week in Year 1, we wrapped up our first half-term with lots of exciting activities! In maths, we continued working on part-part-whole models within ten, strengthening our number sense. We practised our handwriting, making sure our letters were neat and clear. In geography, we explored different parts of the UK, learning about all about the UK. We also finished our Power of Reading text, 'One Day on Our Blue Planet in the Savanna', and the children have done some fantastic writing inspired by the book. 18/10/24 This week in Year 1, we’ve been busy with some exciting new learning! In our science session, ee explored groups of animals like mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians, discovering the differences between them. In maths, we worked with part-part-whole models to help us understand how numbers are made up - also called composing and decomposing numbers. We also finished our book, 'One Day on Our Blue Planet in the Savanna', and the children wrote some lovely sentences using colourful semantics to describe the story. In geography, we had a fantastic time exploring maps, focusing on how they have developed and changed over the years. The children are becoming such great explorers and storytellers!
11/10/24 This week in Year 1, we had so much fun and learnt lots of new things! We celebrated the Harvest Assembly and made some beautiful 'gratitude leaves', which are now displayed on our classroom window. In music, we explored the concept of a beat and practised keeping time. In maths, we've been learning about “more,” “less,” and “equal to,” using lots of hands-on activities. In geography, we started learning about the continents and linking that to our new text. Our new Power of Reading text is, One Day on Our Blue Planet... in Savanna. The children have been writing wonderful sentences about the animals in the story!
04/10/24 We had a busy week in year 1. The children had a visit from author, Mel Bessent! They were enthralled by her story. Hopefully, we have some blossoming authors in our class. We have been working very hard on our writing, focusing on letter formation, writing on the line, finally editing. In our maths lessons, the children have been learning to compare groups by matching. We had lots of fun doing physical demonstrations of those groups! We spent some time drawing maps in our geography lesson. You can really see their creativity coming through in their work.
27/09/24 It has been a busy week in Year 1. We have been hard at working and learning about our five senses in our science lesson. We have also been learning about the 7 continents! Lots of counting! Speaking of counting, in our maths lessons, the children have been learning to count on from any number within 10. We have used different manipulatives to assist them with this. Thank you to the parents that come in to have a look at the classroom. I could see how happy they were to show you their space. We have been to the library this week so the children all have a book for you to read with them at home. Please return it by Tuesday. The children also have the opportunity to browse through the book fair which they loved.
20/09/24 The children have had a wonderful week. We have focused on representing numbers in our maths lessons, using Numicon and counters. In our writing lessons, we have been working on letter formation and writing on the line. The children made their own puppets which we used to 'walk around' a map of Darley Dene in our geography lesson. This links to our learning about maps and how to use them. In our music lesson, the children learnt about finding the beat within a bit of music. We are so proud of each one of them! Have a great weekend.
13/09/24 It's been such a positive week in the Year 1 classroom. The children have settled into Year 1 life really well. We are so proud of them. They have all been such superstars! We have been hard at work. In our maths lessons, the children have been working on counting objects from a larger group. We have been using counters and ten frames to help solidify this concept. In our writing lessons, we have been working on using capital letters for names and places and using the correct punctuation. I am very proud of how well they are all writing! The children have also begun exploring our science, geography, art and computing a bit more this week. They are all so eager to learn, which is wonderful to see. Well done on your first full week of Year 1!
06/09/24 What a wonderful start to the week it has been in the Year 1 classroom. The children have really enjoyed exploring their brand-new classroom and getting familiar with routines and expectations. It's been great to see them becoming more settled in their new space and settling into daily life in Year 1. As a team, we are focusing on building those positive relationships with the children and making sure they feel safe and comfortable. In our writing lessons, the children have been working on using capital letters for words. In our maths lessons, children have been learning to put objects into different groups according to various properties such as shape or colour. As a class, we got to visit the library, which was very exciting for the children! I'm so excited about the rest of the year!
